The new Denton Animal Shelter opened in January 2015. It is owned and operated by the City of Denton and is managed by the City of Denton Animal Services. It is a municipal shelter that must accept any animal (domestic or livestock), regardless of type, breed or condition, surrendered or reported by Denton residents, rescued as stray/abandoned or seized as abused, aggressive/dangerous.

The Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center refers to the portion of the Animal Services Facility that shelters domestic pets. It is named for the lead donor in the DASF capital campaign that raised $2.2 million in private funding toward the facility construction, equipment and supplies. The total cost of the whole facility was over $5.0 million. The DASF funding paid for the adoption and care areas: dog/cat adoption rooms, on-site veterinary clinic, cat enclosed porch, dog play yards, get-acquainted areas and more. The DASF capital campaign was a unique public-private partnership with regard to municipal shelters.

  • In its first 5 years of operation, the new shelter humanely handled over 26,000 animals.

  • The shelter serves the City of Denton and unincorporated Denton County.

  • The new Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center replaced the 33 year-old previous shelter which had seriously deteriorated. The new shelter has triple the capacity for abandoned pets, comfortable and pet-friendly housing, health/wellness clinic, adopter-friendly access, and an atmosphere of hope.

  • Adoption fees are affordable and include spay/neuter, vaccines, microchips, and more.

  • Professional and compassionate staff and volunteers take excellent care of the shelter pets as well as maintain a network of outstanding fosters.

  • The City underwrites the cost of vetting feral cats and offers them free as barn cats.

  • This shelter is considered state-of-the art and one of the best in Texas.
