The foundation’s purpose is to support the Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center (LMAC&AC), other local shelters, and local animal welfare initiatives through:  1) fundraising for programs and initiatives, 2) marketing and public awareness, and 3) educational programs promoting animal welfare.

STRUCTURE/OPERATIONS

DASF is a Texas nonprofit corporation with a governing Board of Directors accountable for all foundation activities. An independent CPA/Auditor is maintained along with a Registered Agent/Corporate Attorney. DASF is also an approved IRS 501(c)3 public charity exempt from Federal tax. Donations to DASF are considered exempt from Federal tax under the IRS code.

DASF does not receive any Federal, State, County, or City funding. Operating funds are only acquired through private donations, grants, planned giving, and fundraising events/solicitations. The foundation is a partner with the City of Denton under a legal agreement to aid the Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center as requested and provided the DASF Board approves the funding.

The foundation is majority volunteer with two paid staff members. DASF is NOT located at the shelter and is an entirely separate entity from the Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center.

DASF does NOT own or operate an animal shelter and does not directly handle pets. The foundation is primarily a fundraising entity that provides grants to shelters and local community pet initiatives. In Addition, DASF provides pet wellness, welfare, and medical assistance in the community as well as educational presentations.

HISTORY

DASF was founded in 2006 by community volunteers and philanthropists Ms. Bette Sherman and Ms. Pete Kamp. The foundation was originally chartered as Denton Animal Shelter Foundation. In 2015, DASF amended the charter with the Texas Secretary of State to be renamed Denton Animal Support Foundation.  IRS documentation was updated at that time. The name was revised to better reflect the broader purpose and goals of the foundation after the new shelter was opened.

LINDA MCNATT ANIMAL CARE & ADOPTION CENTER (LMAC&AC)

The LMAC&AC is also known as the Denton Municipal Shelter.  It is owned and operated by the City of Denton. It is a government entity under the management of Denton Animal Services and the Denton City Customer Service Department. Oversight is provided, as with all city departments, by city management and City Council. It is staffed by city employees and volunteers. DASF is not involved in any policies, procedures, or decisions concerning the shelter.

The shelter has been and remains the primary focus for DASF fundraising.  It is the place where the foundation can have the largest and most critical impact on abandoned, neglected, and abused pets. Over 5,500 pets are handled annually in the shelter as of 2019 – and this will continue to grow as Denton grows.

In 2011, DASF donated $2.2 million to the city toward building and equipping the LMAC&AC, replacing the outdated and overcrowded 30-year-old city shelter. The new shelter opened in January 2015.  Since then, DASF has continued to donate annually over 50% of the foundation’s fundraising to the shelter for adoption programs, pet medical, and equipment/furniture upgrades or replacements. Also, DASF continues to provide marketing/PR support for the pets through social media and paid advertising.

(Note:  The shelter was named LMAC&AC upon receipt of the lead donation to the DASF capital campaign from Jim McNatt in honor of his wife.)

DASF PROGRAMS

The foundation provides support to the LMAC&AC.  Additionally, DASF funds critical programs and needs in the local community. Please review our outstanding and successful programs and initiatives.

PROGRESS AND OUTCOMES

Thanks to our amazing donors, supporters, and volunteers – as well as our hard-working Board and staff – thousands of pets are saved or serviced annually.  In addition, pet owners receive support in order to keep their pets at home, healthy, and safe. Donors receive regular updates on progress and a Year-In-Review Report is published annually.  Please take a look at our past annual reports.
