Say Hello to DASF's New Board Members

Join us in welcoming our newest board members! These three new recruits were recently elected by the foundation. Our Board of Directors is the governing body of DASF. They are our decision-makers for all foundation activities, and responsible for all our legal, financial, and strategic planning. We look forward to seeing what these dedicated animal-lovers bring to our efforts!

Georgianne Burlage

Georgianne is a graduate of the University of North Texas, with Masters Degrees from Texas Woman’s University and the University of Texas, Austin. She is a long time Denton resident who recently retired as a history teacher at Ryan High School. She is an active community volunteer and is Chairman of the DASF Education Committee whose members present programs on animal awareness, adoption and care to Denton elementary schools. Georgianne adopted her sweet dog, Barney, from the Denton shelter in 2015. Barney is an adorably freckled mix of blue heeler, brindle boxer, and American Staffordshire. If you have the chance, ask Georgianne to tell you how Ryan HS students brought her and Barney together. It’ll warm your heart!

Katherine (Katie) McFarland

Katie is a resident of Denton and Executive Director of the Denton County Bar Association and the Denton County Alternative Dispute Resolution Program.  A graduate of the University of North Texas, Katie moved to Denton in 2011 to finish her degree. She also has a background in the restaurant industry and has fostered dogs for various organizations.  Katie grew up on a farm and has always loved animals.  Katie is DASF Board Program Coordinator.  She has two rescued dogs.

Janet Steiss, DVM, PhD

Dr. Steiss is a resident of Sanger and is a retired professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University, Alabama. She is the author or co-author of more than 75 publications in veterinary and scientific journals, as well as the co-author of three books.  Dr. Steiss was also faculty advisor to the Auburn student chapter of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians.  She has been active in many veterinary associations and conferences including the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Steiss received her DVM from  Ontario Veterinary College, Canada and her PhD from the University of Georgia.  Her husband is a veterinarian in Lewisville.  Dr. Steiss is Vice-Chairman of the DASF Education Committee.
